Embarking on a navigation course in the rugged terrain of the Cairngorms, I found myself facing the raw beauty and formidable challenges of Scotland’s most extensive national park. The Cairngorms, known for their majestic landscapes and unpredictable weather, presented a unique opportunity for me to test my skills and resilience against the elements.
The wind was relentless, gusting up to 50mph, accompanied by a biting windchill of minus 20C. Such arduous conditions made it evident early on that ascending to the full level of the plateau was out of the question. The south-easterly winds, known to accelerate dangerously over the plateau, posed a significant risk. There are harrowing tales of adventurers being blown off the plateau, some leading to fatal outcomes. My love for the Cairngorms is profound, yet the thought of venturing out under these conditions filled me with apprehension.
My concerns were not only about the ferocity of the weather but also about my gear’s adequacy. The fear that my clothing would not provide sufficient warmth or allow for the freedom of movement essential in mountaineering was at the forefront of my mind. Additionally, the worry that my boots might cause blisters, as they had in the past, loomed large. Fortunately, Blis-sox proved to be an absolute godsend, mitigating any discomfort, although the bruising of my toes was a clear indicator that my boots were too small to protect my feet on this type of extreme rough and technical ground—a realization that was becoming all too familiar.
The challenge of finding suitable mountaineering attire as a woman is an ongoing struggle. The choices are often limited, and the assumption that all women in this sport are petite does not accommodate those of us who are taller or curvier. Despite standing at 5 foot 8 inches—a height not exceptionally tall—I frequently find myself opting for men’s clothing simply for the extra length it offers.
Despite these challenges, the experience turned out to be incredibly rewarding. The ferocious wind, while daunting, brought with it an exhilarating sense of adventure, especially as ice crystals blasted against my face. However I did quickly opt to protect my eyes with ski goggles so my corneas were not injured and preventing me from finding my way off the mountain in darkness. This harsh encounter with nature reminded me of the mountain’s unforgiving yet awe-inspiring character.
Every trip to the mountains is a learning journey, and this one was no exception. Among the invaluable lessons, I realised the significant difference merino wool makes for those of us who struggle with temperature regulation during physical exertion. The importance of having an ample supply of gloves, the benefits of layering, and the unexpected utility of ski goggles in protecting against wind-induced corneal burns were all made much more apparent in such unforgiving conditions. Additionally, navigating in winter’s darkness taught me the value of absorbing the map and surroundings without being tethered to a compass at every moment.
Descending the mountain at night was a thrilling conclusion to an already exciting course. The joy of navigation and its methodologies grounded me, providing a sense of balance amidst the chaos of the elements. Completing Mountaineering Scotland’s “most technical and physically demanding” course not only was a testament to my growing competence in winter navigation but also solidified my love for the discipline.
This adventure reaffirmed my belief in the importance of proper preparation, the right gear, and the willingness to adapt to the mountain’s conditions. My experience in the Cairngorms was a profound reminder of the mountain’s lessons, both in skill and in spirit.

Embarking on a navigation course in the Cairngorms is more than just a test of physical endurance; it’s an exploration of personal limits and a celebration of the spirit of adventure that drives us to embrace the wild.
As I bid farewell at the close of this chapter, let’s reflect on the profound lessons the mountains offer us. It’s in the embrace of these towering guardians that we find not just challenges, but the opportunity for growth, self-discovery, and the forging of resilience. Miriam Underhill, a pioneering spirit in the mountaineering world, once said, “The mountains have a way of dealing with overconfidence.” Her words echo the humility and respect we must carry into each journey, reminding us that every step taken on these ancient paths is a lesson in strength, perseverance, and the beauty of our own vulnerability.
Let the mountains be your teacher, guiding you through the trials and triumphs, teaching you about your limits and how to surpass them. Remember, it’s not the mountains we conquer, but ourselves.
May you continue to learn, to grow, and to be inspired by every peak and valley you navigate.
Keep climbing, keep learning, and let the mountains mold you.
